If you look up the meaning of what a popup is in Google it would say something like this “Pop up ads are advertisements that show up in a new browser window. There’s no one standard size for it. They also vary widely in the amount of browser commands that show in the window. These ads are just one form of internet advertising used by advertisers to get web users attention.”
Now whether this is a pop up that appears when browsing the Internet or appears as soon as you launch your computer means if it’s malicious or not. Either way, they’re are extremely annoying! If you only notice it when browsing the Internet, it’s more than likely an ad placed on that page in which you can simply close out of by hitting the X. Make sure your browser has pop-up blocker enabled by going to settings of whichever browser you’re using.
When you notice the pop ups no matter what you’re doing, more than likely you are infected with malware which is is an umbrella term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software, including computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, scareware, and other malicious programs. It can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software. In many cases you will get some screen that tells you to run a scan as infections have caused your computer to run slow and when you click on it, things simply get worse. ALWAYS avoid clicking on these pop ups no matter what it is and keep your AntiVirus (AV) up to date but keep in mind even your AV isn’t 100% secure and things might still come through the cracks.
